• Seats, carpets & bootLook for damp, unusual smells and wear that needs explaining.
• Windows, locks & controlsTry the mirrors, windows, central locking and fitted equipment.
• Heating & air conditioningCheck the fan and whether the air gets hot and cold.
• Seat belts & warning lightsCheck the belts and watch the warning lights at start-up.

• Start-upTry a cold start. Notice hesitation or unusual noise; check the ready indicator on an EV.
• Visible fluids & leaksLook at accessible levels and the ground below. Never open a hot coolant cap.
• While stationaryListen for unusual noises. On a combustion engine, check for rough idle or smoke.
• Dashboard messagesRead any warnings. Photograph them for follow-up if needed.

• Gearbox & clutchNotice how it engages and changes gear during normal driving.
• Steering & suspensionListen for knocks. Notice pulling, vibration or unusual steering feel.
• BrakingDuring normal braking, notice pulling, vibration or unusual noise.
• One last look after drivingCheck for fresh leaks, new warnings and anything that has changed.

• VIN & registrationCompare the VIN on the car with the documents.
• Service records & mileageCompare dated records with the odometer. Note any gaps to follow up.
• Keys & accessoriesTry the spare key. Check the items the seller says are included.
• Ask about anything you flaggedKeep unanswered questions for a workshop or a specialist.
